It’s equally
important is to know what topics make frequent appearances in the exam you plan
to appear for. Being familiar with the types of questions that appear
frequently in exams and the areas they pertain too can help you tremendously in
your preparation.
It will
help you allocate your time and channel your efforts towards those topics that
are deemed important by the GATE exam setters. It will also help eliminate the
study bias where you end up spending excess time on your favorite topics or
those that you find most difficult.
With a
new set of parameters, those decoded from the GATE setters’ own minds, you can
prepare a streamlined study plan. Target the more frequent topics first and
revise them regularly.
Here is
a topic-wise break-up of the number of questions appearing in the GATE exam
over the years. The table doesn’t show Engineering Mathematics and General
Aptitude, both of which constitute 15% each towards the total marks. For
Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude constitute
upto 30% of total marks.
